A Three-Month Voyage

Thirty-seven Elves, Human and Halflings had been chosen to leave their homeland in order to colonize a newly-discovered continent. As they went through the checkpoints at Waterdeep Harbor, they waited for the signal that they could board their sailing ship, the Erantiel, for the oceanic voyage.

The Erantiel was an Elven sailing ship that had been part of the group of ships that discovered the still yet-to-be-named continent. The Waterdeep city council, under the direction of His Imperial Majesty, the Emperor of Faerun, hand-picked the first of five colonization groups to establish a Faerun presence and claim to this new continent. The Erantiel's entire crew were Elves. Elves tended to make the best sailors and navigators. No one knew exactly why. Most Elves just seemed better at it than Humans, Halflings or any other race.

The discovery voyage had taken four months to reach the new continent. The ships did not take a direct course at that time, but the greatest cartographers of Faerun determined that a straight sail would only take three months.

The Erantiel's captain finally sounded the gong to signal the passengers to board. He was a slim, built, middle-aged Elf who looked as if he'd spent his entire life at sea and couldn't stand to be in the harbor. A man who enjoyed his family, his wife was the ship's galley ship and his son had just been promoted to Ship's Mate. The sight of all these families boarding his ship to start a new life brought a tear of joy to his eye.

When the Erantiel set sail from Waterdeep Harbor, everyone was excited. In three months, they would be establishing their new homes in the new colony of Rhodesia. There was only one problem. The ship made landfall in less than two weeks. The Captain and the Ship's Mate couldn't understand. This island wasn't on any of the maps of the Great ocean. It was like it had just appeared out of nowhere.

Explorations of the island were made. It was established that it was three times the size of the city of Waterdeep. Towards the center of the island was a small forested area. In it was a cave where a large circular object was found.

It looked to be made of stone with letters that looked slightly Elvish. It wasn't Faerun Elvish, but some of the older Elves could recognize it. "It's Drow," one of them said. "I can't read it, but I know the basic letters."

Many stories were then told about the Great Drow War. For centuries, the High Elves, the Humans and Halflings fought a major war against an evil race of Elves, called the Drow. The Drow had established a great empire through their enslavement of other races like the Dwarves, Goblins, Trolls and Bugbears. Since the Drow couldn't function well in direct sunlight, most of the daytime battles were fought against their minions.

Their constant attacks from seemingly nowhere was found to be available to them because they had an extensive underground network of caverns--even an entire underground city. Seven centuries of battle ended abruptly one day when the Drow suddenly vanished. There had been a few reported sightings of Drow activity, but no one had seen a Drow in more than four hundred years. They were gone and so were most of their artifacts.

This was the first noted sighting of any Drow artifact in decades. Now, the group was standing in front of possibly the largest artifact ever found.

Now, everyone was ready to get news of this find back to Faerun and the wizards in Waterdeep. But when the group returned to the ship, it wasn't there.

Preface

These stories began as a journal writing for my children. I began these with the idea that founded an old AD&D game I ran called "The Eternal Labyrinth". In this game, there were two major races on the order of the Sartyn and Patryn from Weis and Hickman's Death Gate Cycle. These were the Shaoctin and the Quaton.

Originally, instead of being superraces, they were the conglomeration of Human, Elf and Gnome genetics. In these stories, the Gnomes have been replaced with Halflings. In the original game, the characters ran through more than two dozen "phases" that were interlinked with the city of Interphasia. There was no real escape from this life. Three characters became demi-gods:

  • Mackley Torvalds, Half-Elf Cleric/Fighter/Mage
  • Dale Torvalds, Mackley's half-brother, Human Monk
  • Chack Telbar, Halfling Illusionist/Thief

These three journeyed the phases multiple times using the special portals. Eventually they became able to control the portals and determine where they went when they went through.

The stories in this blog revolve around a region known as "The True Realms". "The True Realms" are a group of small islands somewhere off the coast of the Forgotten Realms&mark;' port city of Waterdeep. The colonists (as the next story will tell you) happened upon it completely by accident.

These stories begin with the lives of the great heroes mentioned above but should quickly go to a new generation of heroes:

  • Kanali Meadowleaf, Shaoctin cartographer
  • Jarsali Meadowleaf, Kanali's twin sister, Shaoctin traveller
  • Tabitha Telvar, Jarsali's best friend, Shaoctin scribe & historian
  • Kory Glimmerling, Kanali's best friend, Shaoctin linguistic expert

What is a "traveller"? A traveller is one who spends his or her life exploring the universe through the Shao. It takes a great intellect, as well as great patience, since the apprenticeship process takes more than twenty (20) years. Therefore, most travellers have a prominently (greater than two-thirds) long-lived Elvish ancestry.

Colonial Government

The colonial government on the island is a representative gerontocracy where the elders of each of the three races. The first Council of 15 was established when it was decided that each race be represented by the five oldest members. Each representative serves one term before being replaced by the next oldest in line. After three terms out of office, the representative may return to the Council of 15.

The terms and conditions for representation on the Council of 15 varies by race:

Elves serve for ten (10) years and must be 140 years of age.
Humans serve for four (4) years and must be 21 years of age.
Halflings serve for six (6) years and must be 21 years of age.

The first Council of 15 consisted of (with ages):

Elves - Shakaar Meadowleaf (331), Nerina Meadowleaf (282), Huor Elensar (246), Ireth Elensar (236), Mith Botteil (212)

Humans - Talia Torvalds (43), Gretchen Goldenrod (41), Marcus Torvalds (40), Lucas Lindenwood (34), Lauren Lindenwood (31)

Halflings - Bern Telvar (45), Rand Glimmerling (39), Stephanie Glimmerling (38), Amanda Telvar (24)

The halflings only had four members because they only had four adults in the expedition. Prisca Glimmerling would ascend the the vacant spot in year 14 on the calendar when she turned 21. The other four Halfling members would keep their positions until year 19.

The Shao

The prominent feature in the stories of the True Realms comes in the form of the Shao circle. It is quite similar to the Stargate with the exception of the Drow only using eight letters of their alphabet for the coordinate codes. The coordinates are in sets of five characters (each only able to use once). This allows for fifty-six (56) combinations of coordinates for the Shao circle. Thus, our adventurers can take place on any of 56 places throughout the universe (including the island with the settlement).

The list of possible Shao codes follows:
